Interview by university
The Monash interview, and how to prepare for it.
Monash University interviews as an MMI. This page is what is particular to Monash: the shape of the interview, when it falls, who is invited and what the school says it marks. The method for the format is on its own page, linked below.

When will I hear back from Monash?
Offers for 2027 entry: Mid January 2027, in VTAC’s January round 1, which VTAC releases on 12 January. A smaller January round 2 follows on 27 January. The offer is the answer. Monash publishes no date for telling you how the interview went, so hearing nothing in between is normal.
Every school's offer dates, and why the wait is so long.
My note on Monash
Monash publishes the seven attributes it marks, which is unusual and useful. Read them, then notice that every one of them has to be shown in an answer. Saying you are resilient scores nothing on a resilience station.
Preparing for an MMI
Each station is marked on its own, so the two skills that matter most are reading the prompt for what it is really asking and leaving a bad station behind in its room. Both can be practised, and both are what the stations on this site are for.
What to work on
Monash publishes “ethical reasoning”, “empathy”, “resilience”, “collaboration”, “motivation” among the qualities it assesses. These are the marking domains that covers, and the ones its stations most often turn on.
- Ethical reasoning Can you see both sides of a dilemma, name the principle at stake, and reach a decision you can defend?
- Empathy and perspective-taking In a role-play, do you notice how the other person feels before you try to solve their problem?
- Self-awareness When you talk about a failure, is it a real one, and do you know what it taught you?
- Teamwork Can you describe a time you were not the leader, and what you did instead?
- Motivation for medicine Is your reason yours, is it specific, and does it survive the follow-up question?
Expect to be asked why Monash in particular. How to answer “why do you want to study here?”
